Most Common Sleep Disorders

Hypersomnia
Hypersomnia means difficulty in staying awake and increased daytime sleepiness.

more info
Hypersomnia could be due to sleep-induced breathing disorders such as snoring or apnea (a temporary suspension of breathing during sleep) or to specific diseases such as narcolepsy (frequent and uncontrollable periods of deep sleep), to movement disorders during sleep or associated with neurological or psychiatric disorders, or substance abuse.

Insomnia
One out of three adults complains of insomnia. It is the most prevalent sleep complaint. This sleep disturbance is symptomatic of many disorders rather than a single illness and it may be psychological (stress, psychiatric problems, etc.) or medical (e.g. hormonal disorders, etc.).

One out of three adults complains of insomnia. It is the most prevalent sleep complaint. This sleep disturbance is symptomatic of many disorders rather than a single illness and it may be psychological (stress, psychiatric problems, etc.) or medical (e.g. hormonal disorders, etc.). It may also be related to one’s lifestyle (use of stimulants or misuse of prescribed medicines), sleeping at erratic hours, inadequate sleep hygiene, physical illness or pain and many other factors.

Circadian rhythm disorders
Circadian rhythm disorders (biological clock disorders) which are defined as biological, physiological processes which vary rhythmically during the day (body temperature, sleep and wakefulness, hormonal changes, etc.)
more info
Many of these variables have a cycle of about 24 hours and these cycles are called circadian from the Latin, “circ” = about and “di(es)” = day. Many factors can disturb these circadian rhythms: shift work, jet lag, a disturbed sleep-wake schedule, modern life and more.

Parasomnia & RLS

Parasomnia (Behavioral and movement disorders occurring during sleep) which include sleepwalking, teeth grinding and RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome) which is a disorder characterised by disagreeable leg sensations prior to sleep onset, that cause an almost irresistable urge to move the legs. The symptoms may last from a few minutes up to hours.

Sleep disorders can also be associated with neurological disorders such as epilepsy and other serious medical conditions. In the meantime, it is important to underline that there are many other sleep disturbances brought about by disease or medication, such as depression, neurological diseases, trauma, etc.
